Key AdvantagesExtended growing season
A FlexiTunnel will extend the growing/harvesting season by weeks if not months on either end of the season. A FlexiTunnel will mediate the effects of extreme temperatures and that unexpected freeze. Spring sowings and plantings can be done weeks earlier than in open fields and will result in faster maturing of crops. Higher yielding crops Trials done with brassica crops in Canterbury (T. Mallard) have shown that early Broccoli covered with a FlexiTunnel for the first 6 weeks only, after sowing and successive planting out, can result in twice the yield (weight of Broccoli heads) at harvesting time. Deployment over successive crops A FlexiTunnel that is shifted over successive crops can double the amount of crops grown under cover in any one season and therefore reduce the pay-back period of the tunnels investment dramatically. Optimum growing environment Many crops have different and specific environmental needs during their growing cycle or with changing seasons. With its multiple venting options a FlexiTunnel can offer as little or as much protection as required. Low pest build-up A FlexiTunnel can help pest management in two a distinctive way: Firstly, with the ability to fully side-vent the tunnel, where the greenhouse environment can temporarily be changed and thereby successfully disrupt the establishment of insect pests and diseases in greenhouse crops. Secondly, soil-borne diseases build-up can be avoided by shifting tunnels on to “clean” ground. Easy crop rotation Crop rotation can be enhanced or extended with the option to shift the tunnels to wherever they are required. “Tired” ground can be taken out of rotation and tunnels can be re-erected over “fresh” ground after most of the heavy soil cultivation work has been completed. |
